Mažeikiai refinery to generate renewable energy

The Mažeikiai refinery, part of the ORLEN Group, is set to make a significant investment in advanced, environmentally sustainable solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. A 42.2 MWp solar PV farm will be installed on the refinery’s premises, marking a crucial initiative to reduce its carbon emissions into the atmosphere. ORLEN Lietuva’s investment supports the Group’s broader sustainability commitment to developing low- and zero-carbon captive energy solutions. The farm is scheduled for commissioning at the end of 2025.

ORLEN Group to supply gas to Slovakia

ORLEN, through its subsidiary PGNiG Supply & Trading, has signed a contract with a Slovak company ZSE Group for the sale of gas, the volume of which will cover approximately 30% of ZSE’s demand during the year. The contract exemplifies increasing cooperation among CEE companies to diversify supply sources and enhance gas security within the region.

ORLEN invests to increase energy efficiency of its Czech refinery

ORLEN Unipetrol, the ORLEN Group’s Czech subsidiary, is in the process of constructing a heat recovery unit at its production plant in Kralupy on the Vltava River. The aim of the project is to increase the energy efficiency of Kralupy refinery by flue gas waste heat utilization, which were previously released into the atmosphere. By using the recovery unit will be flue gas heat used for heating of turbine condensate and producing of boiler feed water using in various plant processes. Implementation of the recovery unit will lead to significant energy savings of 5 MW of the thermal energy per hour. Over the course of a year, the installation will enable the recovery of as much heat as would be sufficient to heat nearly 10,000 households. The innovative solution used in this project comes from idea of employee from ORLEN Unipetrol’s development department and have been developed by engineers from ORLEN Unipetrol. The project, valued at approximately CZK 0.5 billion (around PLN 100 million), aligns with the ORLEN Group’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Green project in Trzebinia produces fuel from used oils

ORLEN Południe, an ORLEN Group company, has launched a new facility at its Trzebinia refinery to produce biocomponents from used cooking oils and animal fats. UCO FAME will deliver 30,000 tonnes of second-generation esters and 7,000 tonnes of technical-grade glycerine annually. This green project is part of the ORLEN Group's strategy in the area of biofuels, enabling the replacement of fossil fuels with fuels made from waste materials.

ORLEN Group will build its own oil pressing plant

ORLEN Południe, part of the ORLEN Group, has signed a contract for the construction of a state-of-the-art oilseed processing plant in Kętrzyn (Province of Olsztyn). The plant is set to process 500 thousand tonnes of rapeseed annually, yielding a production output of 200 thousand tonnes of oil for the purpose of manufacturing low-carbon biofuels. This investment will not only generate employment opportunities but will also be a stable source of demand for Polish farmers cultivating the rapeseed crop.

ORLEN Group’s investment in Mažeikiai gathers pace

An Italian-designed reactor, which lies at the core of investments in deep crude conversion, has arrived in Lithuania. This key component of the hydrocracking unit will be transported to ORLEN Group’s refinery in Mažeikiai within the next two weeks. The new plant will make it possible to increase the output of high-margin products as early as 2025, thereby enhancing the profitability of the Lithuanian facility and bolstering the energy security of the entire region.

ORLEN Invests in Bioplastics

ORLEN is steadfastly executing the largest petrochemical project in Europe in the last 20 years. The company has decided to scale up the expansion of the Olefins Complex at the Production Plant in Płock. This move is in response to the growing market demand for petrochemical products, which serve as the foundation for manufacturing everyday items, such as car parts and home appliances. The expansion of the Olefins Complex will result in approximately 650 new jobs. Importantly, the project will enable a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions per tonne of product and will position PKN ORLEN as a leader in the European petrochemical industry.

ORLEN to develop new fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf

ORLEN Group and its licence partners have received approval of the Plan for development and operation of Ørn and Alve Nord fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The development will provide the company with approximately 0.4 bcm of natural gas per year at peak production. Alve Nord and Ørn carbon intensity will be more than 3 times lower than the global average for upstream industry. Earlier this month the Norwegian authorities has approved development and production plans for other ORLEN Group fields Fenris and Tyrving as well as for the Yggdrasil area.
