ORLEN secures EU grant for hydrogen projects

The international HySPARK project, led by ORLEN in collaboration with a consortium of 17 global partners, has become the first in Poland to receive funding from the EU Clean Hydrogen Partnership programme. Close to EUR 9 million will be allocated to the production and testing of hydrogen-powered vehicles for Chopin Airport and Warsaw’s public transportation system.

ORLEN secures accreditation for automotive grade hydrogen testing

ORLEN Laboratorium’s Refining Products Testing Unit in Trzebinia is the first lab in Poland and the third one worldwide to have achieved accreditation for advanced automotive grade hydrogen testing methods. The positive assessment from the Polish Accreditation Centre holds key importance for the hydrogen producer – ORLEN Południe. In 2024, ORLEN Laboratorium aims to secure accreditation for its second lab in Włocławek, soon to house a Hydrogen Hub.

ORLEN commercialises innovative Multifuel technology

The testing phase for the 1MW prototype cogeneration set featuring the Multifuel system, which enables electricity and heat generation using hydrogen, natural gas or their mixtures, has been successfully completed. The prototype stands out on a global scale, employing a proprietary solution developed by ORLEN. The Multifuel system can be installed in generating units that are already in operation, allowing them to be gradually converted to run on hydrogen. Multifuel is set to expedite the adoption of alternative fuels in the power industry, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions in the sector. ORLEN has filed a patent application for its invention.

ORLEN partners with Yokogawa to develop cutting-edge technology for sustainable aviation fuel production

ORLEN and Yokogawa Europe, the regional headquarters for Japan’s Yokogawa Electric Corporation, announce they have joined forces to initiate industrial-scale production of carbon neutral synthetic aviation fuels. In a landmark Memorandum of Understanding signed on September 21, the two companies have come together to enhance the technological process responsible for synthesising fuel from carbon dioxide and green hydrogen. ORLEN is looking to establish itself as a frontrunner in this emerging market segment, poised to drive effective decarbonisation of the aviation industry.

ORLEN VC invests in technology designed to facilitate reuse of EV batteries

ORLEN VC, Poland’s largest corporate venture capital fund owned by the ORLEN Group, has invested in a state-of-the-art platform enabling the reuse and later recycling of batteries from millions of electric vehicles placed on the market every year. This innovative solution created by Germany’s Circunomics, in which ORLEN VC has become a major shareholder, will help reduce the carbon footprint of electric vehicles by up to 50%. In less than two years since it was launched, ORLEN VC has built a portfolio of eight equity investments, totalling more than PLN 150m.

PKN ORLEN investing to promote circularity

PKN ORLEN is always on the lookout for innovative solutions that can strengthen the competitive position of its business with a positive impact on the environment. For instance, as a pioneer in Poland, it is implementing the innovative ‘Blue Bridge’ project, designed to enable a 25% reduction in the amount of water abstracted from the Vistula River to support industrial processes of the Company’s Production Plant in Płock. Together with its project partner Wodociągi Płockie, the local water utility company, PKN ORLEN has signed a letter of intent with the State Water Management Agency PGW Wody Polskie providing for the construction of a recycling system for wastewater streams coming from the municipal treatment plant for reuse by PKN ORLEN. The project, which is in line with the circular economy concept, will be put into operation in 2025.

PKN ORLEN and PESA step up cooperation to build hydrogen-powered trains

PKN ORLEN and PESA Bydgoszcz have signed a strategic cooperation agreement to develop a comprehensive offering for public rail transport. Under the agreement, PKN ORLEN will provide hydrogen fuel and refuelling infrastructure for PESA-manufactured shunting locomotives and passenger trains. The cooperation will facilitate development of a carbon-neutral commercial offering for public transport organisers and operators of logistics centres, transshipment terminals and ports.

PKN ORLEN is testing an innovative electronic price labelling technology PESL as part of its ORLEN Skylight accelerator programme. Perovskite cell-powered labels enable the use of algorithms to dynamically manage prices and promotional content at the selected ORLEN service station, making it possible to adjust product prices to reflect seasonality, availability or temporary special offers.
