Small-scale LNG is an alternative to gas delivered through pipelines. It allows supplying gas to customers not connected to the transmission network, covering short-term peak needs, or is used as fuel for LNG-powered vehicles, including ship bunkering. Currently, small-scale LNG transportation is carried via truck tankers and ISO-containers. It will soon be expanded to include the possibility of shipping by sea based on the LNG ship loading terminal at the Swinoujscie terminal.
Diversification
In order to diversify and increase Poland's energy security in 2020, we have established cooperation with the Lithuanian company KN Energies, as a result of which we are the exclusive user of the small-scale LNG receiving and transhipment station in Klaipeda, Lithuania. The Klaipeda receiving and transhipment station is equipped with five tanks with a total capacity of 5,000 m3, which translates into 2,250 t of liquefied gas. Two loading stations for tanker trucks or ISO-containers operate there. The recipients of LNG are regasification facilities located in the northeastern part of Poland.
The market also receives LNG from denitrification plants operating within ORLEN Group and at the same time liquefied gas plants in Odolanów and Grodzisk Wielkopolski. These facilities were the pioneers of LNG production in Poland.
An alternative to gas pipelines
Work is underway on the floating LNG terminal (FSRU) project in Gdansk, which is estimated to be operational in late 2027 or early 2028. This means that within the next few years, ORLEN Group's offer will be expanded to include the possibility of loading LNG onto tanker trucks in the Trójmiasto.
Application of small-scale LNG:
- for the needs of end customers not connected to the transmission network (including sensitive customers on the so-called LNG Islands),
- as traction fuel (road and sea transport),
- industrial applications (broad spectrum of industries).
